This is snorkelling in the Turks and caicos islands (Tci). snorkelling is an absolute “must do” on the islands. Whether it’s from the shore or with a group boat trip or if you prefer the solitude of a private charter. coral reefs are protected in the Tci but it’s possible to swim around them directly from the beach. smiths reef and coral gardens reef oﬀer perfect snorkelling for those on a budget, but please respect the reef and swim around the marker bouys and not inside the circle. novice swimmers shouldn’t be put oﬀ by charters on local boats. The boats are equipped with bouyancy aids to asisst with novice snorkellers. for the ultimate vacation memory, char-ter your own private snorkelling boat, the beneﬁts are endless and the memories inﬁnitely more than your camera can capture. your own vessel will usually collect you from the beach at your resort and whisk you away from Providenciales to one of several islands and reefs. here they can give snorkelling tips and advice and also point out many interesting sights and features. We are fortunate to have reefs at many diﬀerent depths so your captain can ﬁnd the perfect one for your party. so what are the pros and cons of the diﬀerent ways to snorkel? shore dives are of course free, but can become a little crowded so it’s best to avoid peak periods, lots of people = fewer ﬁsh sightings. group trips are cheap and can be great fun for party people, however excess rum punch can make some trips a little rowdy. Private charter is obviously the ultimate, it’s your boat to be shared only by your party, the day revolves totally around your wishes and the crew are at your command. small parties = more view-ings and these can include whalesharks and whales in addition to the myriad of spectacular ﬁsh and crus-taceans. fresh lobster for lunch? no problem. your crew will show you how to dive for lobster and conch and prepare it by bbq on a deserted island. Want to catch ﬁsh too? no worries! Want to visit the ghost ship? Pirates cove (cliﬀ jump-ing), photograph wild iguanas, snorkel over the old British cannons or stop to beachcomb for seashells? no problem. and of course at the end of a demanding day, what better than to cruise home sipping cocktails as the sun sets?
