Island Shopping
DUTY FREE Shopping
IN RECENT YEARS, THE TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS have matured into a worldclass destination. Our spas, restaurants, and now even our shopping, can compete on the same stage as other luxury vacation spots around the globe.
You'll find the boutiques at many of our resorts and hotels provide excellent shopping opportunities, carrying everything from high-end beauty products, and resort wear to jewellery, gifts and souvenirs. In addition to the resort shops, there are a wide variety of independent stores located across the island. Fabulous boutiques and gift shops can be found at any of our shopping villages. The Saltmills, The Regent Village, Ports of Call, and Caicos Cafe Plaza are all located on Grace Bay Road. You'll also find many special buys at shops located a little farther inland at the Graceway Plaza and Central Square or Downtown.
Providenciales’ busiest shopping area is, by far, Grace Bay. Jai’s, our luxury duty free store, is an anchor tenant in The Regent Village. Jai’s was one of the first businesses to relocate to the area, and in the several months since, many other shops have followed suit. As you will see during your exploration of our beautiful island, Grace Bay has become Providenciales’ version of a shopping district, albeit prettier, sunnier and much closer to the beach than anything you’d find in mainland North America or the UK! For an eyeopening view of shopping in the Turks & Caicos Islands, visit Jai’s and compare the price of a Rolex watch or Chanel perfume to the price you’d have to pay at home. Many items that might be considered out of reach at your regular jeweler or retailer can be purchased quite economically in the Turks and Caicos Islands. The absence of sales or luxury taxes ensures there are many deals to be found. Items such as jewellery, watches, cameras, perfumes, brand-name clothing and accessories, crystal, china, cigars and liquor are available to visitors duty-free at selected locations. This represents a wonderful buying opportunity; remember even if the ticket price of any given item is the same as it would be at home, the savings in sales tax can mean a large discount!
The Turks and Caicos Islands are also one of the very few places in the world where you can take home souvenir conch shells! Conch are endangered in much of the world, and are a protected species. Still plentiful in the Turks and Caicos, their large and lovely white and pink shells make pretty additions to any room. You can take up to three, be sure to have a receipt proving they were purchased on these islands. Another unique memento of your trip to the Turks and Caicos Islands would be to take home something crafted using the rare Conch pearl. Jai designs a line of jewellery that includes these treasures, ask at his store and someone will be happy to show you his creations.
The Turks and Caicos Islands have developed a rich tradition of music and art among the local population, many of whom have succeeded in their chosen craft on the world stage. We also benefit from an infusion of creative energy by many fortunate and grateful expatriates who have made these islands their home over the years. If you fall hopelessly in love with a piece of art that won't fit in your luggage, don't give it a second thought! Our galleries are adept at making sure the creation of your dreams is shipped directly to your home. There’s also a plus to buying art or other goods created within the Turks and Caicos Islands; upon returning home you won't have to pay duty on anything you’ve purchased that is locally made, here in paradise. Be sure to have a look at the goods of our local artisans, which can be found in a variety of shops all over the island. And remember to look for Cds produced by our talented musicians, there's no better way to recall the memories of a place and time than with the use of music!
Whether you’re a full-blown fashion maven, a collector of fine jewellery, or a perfume junkie, Providenciales will satisfy your urge to splurge, possibly at a fraction of the price you would pay back home! So, take a break from the world’s best beach and the finest dining of any Caribbean Island, to go on a shopping spree! Take your time, peruse our shops, and make your selections wisely…there is so much to choose from.
Art Provo
PHOTOS BY KATHRYN FOX
WHERE WHEN HOWTALKS TO MARY O’NEILL, PROPRIETRESS OF PROVIDENCIALES GALLERY, ART PROVO.
How long have you been living in the Turks and Caicos Islands?
I have been living in the Turks and Caicos since 1981, we moved to Grand Turk for five years, we moved over here to Providenciales in 1986.
When did you open Art Provo?
I opened the gallery in July 2003. My assistant, Irene Dean who was raised in Blue Hills, joined me six years ago. She’s an invaluable part of my team.
Why did you decide to open a gallery?
I’ve always loved art and when I was a child, my mother used to take me to the galleries in Dublin, Ireland where I grew up. Wherever I’ve travelled, I’ve always visited the galleries. It just seemed like a natural fit.
How do you choose the artists that show in your gallery?
The artists come into the shop and ask me if I’d be willing to show their art. That’s how I’ve met all the artists I carry. All the artists in the gallery live on the island, some part-time residents and some are full-time residents. And I’m particularly proud to represent Dwight Outten who’s a Turks Islander from Middle Caicos but the artists I have are from all over the world, including the US, Canada, Belgium, Haiti and the UK.
Can you tell us a little more about Dwight Outten?
Dwight was born on Middle Caicos and is a self-taught artist. He is very well known for his depiction of the typical island house, he also paints some lovely beach scenes, flamingos, and the Caicos Banks. But his depictions of the local island houses are really fantastic, and many people collect them. Once they start collecting, people come in every year to add to their collection. I even had someone email me to buy one online for mother’s day this year.
How do vacationers take their purchases home?
We encourage people to carry back their art on their flights, but we ship all over the world. We are excellent at packaging, we have never had one problem, and we’ve shipped some large pieces. If you’re carrying art on the airplane, usually a flight attendant will help you place the piece somewhere for the duration of the flight. We’ve never had anyone saying they’ve had a problem travelling with their art.
In addition to paintings, what other forms of art do you carry at Art Provo?
Some wonderful stuff by Heather Simpson-Forbes, both glass work and jewellery. Also seaglass jewellery made by two women on Grand Turk, Chris Davis-James and Hazel; all the sea glass comes from the beach over there. I carry Middle and North Caicos baskets, and have all the sea salt products from Salt Cay Salt Works, bath salts and edible salts, they’re very nicely packaged and really popular with tourists.
Do you have a favourite painting in the gallery?
I like to have a wide range of art because everyone’s taste is different. I have everything from wonderful oils, great acrylics and mixed media to some very provocative pieces. For example those by Sandra Knuyt, these are real statement pieces. However, a lot of people want to bring back something that reminds them of their holiday here. The typical beach scenes that represent our fabulous beach, sky, and ocean are very popular. I like everything I carry, there’s nothing in my shop I don’t like!
If you were to give some advice on choosing art, what would it be?
Where are you going to put it, the size of the place, the colour of the décor - for a lot of people this is important. Sometimes people just buy something because they just really love it and then they have to build the room around it, which is ok too. Price is also important, especially for younger people just starting out.
Do you have any artistic talent?
I can’t draw a straight line myself! Absolutely hopeless, no talent in that area. I’ve given it a go but that’s not where my talents lie. My talents lie on the retail side, I get a sense of achievement out of sending someone home with something really special and unique from the Turks and Caicos. I’ve sold art to people from all over the world; just yesterday I sold two pieces to a couple from India!
