Captain's Report
I WOULD SAY MARCH AND APRIL ARE TWO OF THE BEST MONTHS IN THE YEAR TO FISH TURKS AND CAICOS.
It’s the time for mahi mahi – also known as dorado or dolphin fish – a fish known for its strength and fight. Catches of between 20 and 30 lbs are fairly common, but larger specimens of up to 60 lbs are not uncommon. You just need to know where to look.
The record catch for the mahi mahi came from the waters around the Bahamas – weighing in at a whopping 88 lbs. But we know it can be beaten, so we’ve set ourselves the challenge of hooking that record-breaking prize fish here around Turks & Caicos. And that record could be yours.
Rest assured our crews know a thing or two about fishing and breaking records. They also have the skills and local knowledge to guarantee an unforgettable day’s fishing. At this time of year, the water around the islands is teeming with all types of incredible game fish, there for the taking. We’ll soon be seeing bull dolphins, tuna and some monster-sized wahoos, many in excess of 100 lbs. At 138 lbs we currently hold the record for wahoo. And although their main season is January to March, there is just an outside chance you might hook the majestic white marlin.
But one of the most magnificent and powerful creatures around at this time is the sailfish – strictly catch and release – that can grow to 10 ft in length and 100 lbs in weight, and are popular for their lively fight.
And we must never overlook the big oceanic sharks that are plentiful in our waters – particularly at this time of year as they run behind the migrating humpback whales, en route to South America, in the hope of picking off any calf careless enough to stray from its mother’s side. Makos, tigers, hammerheads and bulls are commonly sighted – and caught – all bringing something fresh and exciting to the sport-filled couple of months ahead of us.
Then just imagine bringing a great day’s fishing to a close by heading to a secluded sandy beach and building a barbecue on a bed of conch shells. Snorkel in the clear waters while a few yards away on shore the day’s catch sizzles over the coals. The aromas are fantastic and there can be no better way to wind down than with a plate of fish, cooked to perfection, accompanied by a nice cool beer.
To make things taste even better, throughout March and April those nice folks in our booking office are offering a mouthwatering 10% charter discount when you call them direct on +1 649 231 4420.
Happy fishin’ to you all.
